Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Health Research Cutbacks.

Bernard Allen

Question:

180 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if she will make a statement on recent comments by researchers at the Department of Pharmacology at University College, Galway, that Government cutbacks in the budget for the health research board have seriously harmed research projects which have just been completed.

The health research board between 1986 and 1990 funded a five year research unit on affective disorders based jointly in University College, Galway, and Trinity College, Dublin. I was pleased to launch the unit's findings, along with the reports of three other research units, on 18 December last. The unit's report concluded that, despite the relatively ambitious programme which it set itself, many of the targets were achieved.

The total funding provided to the affective disorders unit by the health research board was £373,000, which is a very substantial investment in the context of the total funding available for health research.
