Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Jim Higgins

Question:

187 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if he is prepared to appoint a remedial teacher to serve Filemore national school, Coars national school, Valentia national school, Portmagee national school and Ballinskelligs national school, County Kerry.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

188 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the urgent need for a remedial teacher at the Burrow national school, Howth Road, Sutton, Dublin 13, and at Springdale school, Raheny, Dublin 5, he will give an application by both schools for a remedial teacher serving both schools every consideration with a view to making an appointment as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 187 and 188 together.

As the Deputies will be aware, 80 additional remedial posts serving over 240 schools were allocated in June 1991 in accordance with arrangments under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

These appointments were made following the collection of data and information by my Department's primary inspectorate from schools. The posts were then allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected by the inspectorate.

The needs of other schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputies, will be kept under review.
