Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Requirements for Teachers of Religion.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

191 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education whether Roman Catholic priests who are appointed as teachers of religion are exempt from the requirement sought from secular teachers of religion that they be qualified in secular subjects.

The procedures governing the appointment of teachers of religion in vocational schools are contained in Circular Letter 7/79 of my Department. The terms of that circular make no distinction in regard to the qualifications necessary for appointment as a teacher of religion, between Roman Catholic priests and lay persons.
