Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Primary School Technological Aids Funding.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

195 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the efforts, if any, which are being made and (2) the funds which are available to provide (a) television sets, (b) video equipment and (c) computers in primary schools.

Moneys have been made available over the years for the purchase of technological aids in the primary and the post primary sectors.

My Department has provided computers for some schools in designated areas and has given grants to enable certain children with handicaps to acquire a computer for their personal use.

The reports of the Primary Curriculum Review Body and the Primary Education Review Body have made certain recommendations in regard to technological aids and information technology. A full examination of these reports is at present being co-ordinated by my Department, and the views of all interested parties are being considered.

Provision for technological aids and information technology will be considered in the light of this examination and within the limits of the available capital.
