Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Improvements.

Nora Owen

Question:

29 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will agree to meet a deputation from the Parents' Association of Portmarnock community school to discuss the urgent need for road improvements outside their 1,000 pupil school.

As the road in question is not a national road, responsibility for its maintenance and improvement rests with Dublin County Council and the cost of any work falls to be financed from the local authority's own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants provided by my Department.

Dublin County Council's discretionary grant has risen from £972,000 in 1986 to £1,395,000 in 1991 and I hope shortly to be in a position to notify the allocation for 1992. As the determination of priorities in the expenditure of the discretionary grant is a matter for the council, it would be appropriate for any interests concerned to make their case to the council rather than to me.
