Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tralee (Kerry) Water Quality.

Liam Kavanagh

Question:

73 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself that the quality of water in Tralee Bay, County Kerry, satisfies the standards set out by the EC.

There are no generally applicable EC water quality standards in respect of bays. Kerry County Council monitors bathing waters at two locations in the vicinity of Tralee Bay, i.e. at Ballyheigue and Banna Strand. I understand that both locations complied in 1991 with the standards set in the European Communities (Quality of Bathing Water) Regulations, 1988, and that, in addition, both were awarded blue flags.

A major sewerage scheme has been proposed by Tralee Urban District Council to provide a level of treatment consistent with the objectives of the Government's environment action programme and of the EC Directive on Urban Waste Water Treatment.
