Vol. 415 No. 7

Written Answers. - Organ Transplants.

Bernard Allen

Question:

107 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the number of organ transplants which took place in Ireland in 1991; and if he will further outline (1) the type of transplant which took place and (2) the overall cost.

In 1991, 14 heart transplants, 138 kidney transplants and 112 cornea transplants were performed in this country at an approximate overall cost of £2.6 million.

The cost of transplant operations varies significantly from patient to patient and on the type of transplant performed. The approximate figure that I have given includes costs for the operation and the immediate post-operative care. In some cases additional costs are incurred particularly for medication for some time after the transplant operation.
