Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Late Night Bus Service.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

36 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if she will outline the way in which the Christmas-New Year late night bus operation was monitored nationwide; if she has satisfied herself that the service, as advertised by PAMBO and others, was in fact provided; if she will give details of her plans at present for the provision of the late night service; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The late night services provided by Dublin Bus were monitored by the company by way of radio communications between control headquarters and the bus drivers and inspectors at the departure terminals. In relation to both the Dublin Bus and PAMBO services in the Dublin area, officials of my Department observed and monitored their operation on a number of occasions. In addition, PAMBO have indicated that a special management team which they established allocated two nightly dispatchers in Dublin and a key person in the provinces to oversee and report on the operation of the services by their members.

I am generally satisfied that the services to which the Deputy refers were provided as advertised with the exception of the PAMBO service in Cork which was withdrawn due to lack of demand.

Dublin Bus have decided to extend their Friday and Saturday late night services indefinitely. Members of PAMBO have been granted an extension to the end of this month of their licences to operate on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. They have applied to my Department for licences to provide late night services on a medium-to long term basis and a decision will be taken in this regard shortly.
