Vol. 416 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Honours System.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

4 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach if he holds views similar to those of his predecessor in regard to the introduction of means of honouring persons who have achieved national or international distinction with consequent benefit to the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am favourably disposed, provided all-party agreement can be reached, towards the establishment of an honours system as a means of honouring persons who have achieved national or international distinction with consequent benefit to the country.

Towards this end I would also be agreeable to have exploratory talks with the leaders of the other parties at some future date to ascertain whether any initiative in this area would have their support. If there is general support for the idea we might each nominate a representative to an informal working group which could prepare details of an appropriate scheme.

At this stage would the Taoiseach be prepared first, to indicate some kind of schedule for meeting other party leaders and, second, draw up some kind of framework within which such discussions could be taken further?

I will contact the other leaders at the earliest possible date.

What will the Taoiseach do with their ideas? Will Sinéad O'Connor get an award?

P.J. Mara.

He has gone to the wall.

I am calling Question No. 5.
