Vol. 416 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballylongford (Kerry) Marina Development.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

12 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine if his Department has any plans to develop a marina at Saleen, Ballylongford, County Kerry.

My Department, whose role in a development such as this would relate to the granting of leases under the Foreshore Act, 1933, have received no such application for permission to develop a marina at the location in question.

I remind the Minister that one of his colleagues featured in a newspaper article before the 1989 election announcing such a marina with much pomp and ceremony. It appears that there is an application for grant aid under the European Regional Development Fund with the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications at the moment for the provision of visitor moorings for the marina at Saleen in Ballylongford. I urge the Minister to make representations to the Minister concerned to sanction the grant as soon as possible.

I have a lot of sympathy with the Deputy in this matter but, as I said, my function would be to grant a lease once one was applied for. From what the Deputy said, I presume that such an application could come in the near future.

It is time for the House to move on to other business.

Could you manage to fit in Question No. 13? That question is very brief and I should appreciate it if you could accommodate me.

If the House agrees to that procedure and it is taken that only a very short time will be spent on the question? Is the Minister happy about that?

Yes, if the House agrees, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle. I certainly shall not take too long with the answer.
