Vol. 416 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Port Facilities.

Alan Shatter

Question:

21 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Marine if he has satisfied himself with the current capacity of containerised facilities, particularly on short haul routes, at Dublin Port, and if he has any proposals to provide additional capacity at the port.

The lo/lo facilities on the central corridor from this country are provided by Dublin Port and ro/ro facilities by Dublin Port and Dún Laoghaire harbour. My Department are promoting further development of Dublin Port's lo/lo and ro/ro facilities through the EC funded Operational Programme on Peripherality 1989-93. Should the port wish to develop any additional container handling facilities, these will be considered for funding under the operational programme, subject to availability of funds.

The following Dublin Port projects are being assisted through the operational programme: (a) the acquisition of a bulk crane, (b) the acquisition of a harbour tug and (c) a lo/lo development on the South Bank Quay.

These projects have an estimated total cost of over £14 million.
