Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Mortgage Interest Relief.

Frank Crowley

Question:

170 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork is unable to obtain income tax relief on a mortgage.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that a return of income/claim for allowances form for the year 1988-89 and certificates of interest paid in respect of the years 1988, 1989 and 1990 were received by the inspector of taxes from the taxpayer in April 1991.

However, as her husband's tax affairs were dealt with in another tax district it was necessary for the inspector to obtain additional information from that district. The inspector concerned wrote to her husband on 12 August 1991 for the relevant information. To date this has not been received. A reminder has been issued by the inspector to the taxpayer's husband and on receipt of the necessary information their liability to tax will be reviewed and any refund due will be paid.

Mortgage interest relief amounting to £1,300 (estimated) has been allowed by the inspector of taxes to the taxpayer's husband in respect of the current tax year, 1991-92.
