Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Howth (Dublin) Harbour Development.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

222 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Marine when he will establish an advisory committee on Howth harbour in County Dublin; and whether this committee would have the powers to monitor beaches in the Howth-Sutton area.

I have recently announced the establishment of a port users committee at Howth Fishery Harbour centre. I envisage that the committee will provide a valuable forum for port users to meet with my Department, resolve problems and provide a more efficient and cost effective service. The committee will advise on appropriate developments, resolve problems and assist the harbour master in ensuring the efficient management of the port. The first meeting of this committee will be held shortly.

Question:

223 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Marine when it is proposed to erect the fish auction hall in Howth harbour, County Dublin; if he will undertake to have a chill room provided in the fish auction hall; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I announced last week, work will commence this year on the building of a new fish auction hall at Howth. The new auction hall will provide local fishermen with modern handling and preparation facilities to ensure maximum prices for their catches.

The design and detailed costings of the building are now at an advanced stage and there will be local consultation prior to the commencement of building.

A chill room is not a standard requirement for fish auction halls. The quick throughput of fish ensures that the product reaches its destination with minimum delay.
