Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Stena Sealink Service.

Seán Barrett

Question:

229 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to reports indicating the transfer of the Sealink Stena Line to Dublin Port and the catastrophic effect such a move would have on the staff in Dún Laoghaire harbour and on business generally in Dún Laoghaire; if he will give an assurance that no such move is contemplated; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans to transfer the ferry port of Dún Laoghaire to Dublin Port. The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Development Plan is being finalised at present by the Interim Dún Laoghaire Harbour Board. I expect to receive its recommendations in the next few weeks. This will be of assistance to me in considering the alternatives available in Dublin Bay for the development of berthage and terminal facilities in the future.

The reports to which Deputy Barrett refers relate, I understand, to claims that Sealink Stena Line is considering transferring its service to Dublin Port. These claims have, I believe, been strenuously denied by the company. I am aware of the overwhelming support of the people of Dún Laoghaire for the retention of this service and I fully appreciate the importance they attach to its continuation.
