Question:

232 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice if he will give an assurance that (a) sufficient numbers of gardaí will be assigned to Howth Garda station, County Dublin; and if he will also assure residents living in the Howth area that their Garda station will not be downgraded in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 231 and 232 together.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 139 on 10 December 1991 which gave statistics of Garda strength at Howth station on 31 December in each of the years 1988 to 1990. The equivalent strength at the station on both 31 December 1991 and 31 January 1992 was 31.
There are no plans to downgrade Howth Garda station. The Garda authorities inform me that manning levels at the station will be kept under review having regard to overall resources and other demands on Garda services in the Dublin Metropolitan Area.
