Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Travel Assistance for Prisoners' Families.

Michael Creed

Question:

235 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice whether there is any scheme of financial assistance available from his Department to the families of prisoners overseas for the costs of visitation.

There is no scheme operated by my Department for the provision of financial assistance to families wishing to visit relatives held in prisons abroad. It would not be appropriate that such a scheme, involving as it would a social welfare dimension, be administered by the Department of Justice.
