Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Marks.

John Bruton

Question:

269 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the proportion of marks in each subject of the leaving certificate which is granted for, (a) project work, (b) oral testing and (c) written examination, and its equivalent information for examination in other countries.

In the case of Irish an oral examination comprises 150 marks out of 600. In the case of French, Spanish, German and Italian oral and aural tests account for 60 marks each out of a total of 400.

A practical test with 100 marks and an aural test with 130 marks out of a total of 400 is provided in music.

In art the practical test accounts for 250 marks out of 400.

In the case of agricultural science and agricultural economics there is an assessment made of course work undertaken by students. This assessment relates to 80 to 100 marks respectively in the case of agricultural science and agricultural economics out of a total of 400 marks in each case.

A practical examination and a project each carries 150 marks in the case of both engineering and construction studies. In each case the higher level paper is marked out of 600 and the ordinary level out of 500.

In the case of all other subjects marks are assigned in relation to the written examinations only.

Detailed information on the proportion of marks assigned to the various elements referred to is not readily available from international literature on examinations in other countries.
