Vol. 416 No. 7

Written Answers. - Pigmeat Industry Grants.

Austin Deasy

Question:

27 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the amount of money received by bacon-curing and pork plants in this country, by way of grant-aid, from the EC; and whether there is any stipulation in the conditions of the grants that products from these plants are for export to third countries only and will not be in competition with pork butchers in this country and elsewhere in the Community.

In the five year period 1987 to 1991 the EC Commission awarded FEOGA grant aid of £37.8 million to Irish pigmeat plants. The conditions subject to which this aid was awarded did not include any stipulations as to the markets on which the output of the beneficiary plants was to be sold.
