Vol. 417 No. 2

Written Answers. - Electricity Efficiency Improvement.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

22 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Energy if he has any plans for new initiatives in energy conservation in the area of lighting efficiency; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A committee to improve the efficiency of electricity end-use throughout the country was established by my Department in 1990. The ESB, and consumer and industrial interests, are represented on this committee.

The ESB, working closely with my Department, are currently taking new initiatives in the promotion of compact fluorescent lights in the domestic, industrial and commercial sectors. They are also carrying out surveys of industrial and commercial premises and advising on how electrical efficiency may be increased, in lighting and other areas. Advice and information is being provided to all customers through advertising programmes, information booklets and articles in the trade press.

My Department also sees considerable scope for savings in street lighting, and local authorities are being encouraged to replace mercury lamps in street lights with high pressure sodium lamps, which are more efficient.
