Vol. 417 No. 2

Written Answers. - Energy Production Sources.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

58 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline his proposals for the more efficient production of energy sources in Ireland.

I have always had as a priority objective the requirement for an efficient and effective energy infrastructure at the lowest possible economic cost.

Activities in the energy sector are kept under ongoing review with a view to improving efficiency and cost competitiveness. Specific initiatives currently under way include the major review on the future structure of the electricity industry, together with the gas interconnector with the UK. The feasibility of an UK electricity interconnector is also being evaluated. In addition I have been conscious for some time that at current energy prices, the price of milled peat is high. Bord na Móna is carrying through a major restructuring programme designed to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Over time and as the Bord na Móna debt burden is reduced this should assist in bringing down the price of milled peat. In relation to the Whitegate Refinery discussions are continuing on an upgrade project. Full evaluation of any proposals for an upgrade are essential to ensure the optimum overall benefit to the Irish consumer.
