Vol. 417 No. 2

Written Answers. - “Hello Money” Demands.

Ivor Callely

Question:

77 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the fact the existence of "hello money" has been demanded in certain industries; if he has satisfied himself that the practice has ended since the enactment of the Competition Act; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The payment or receipt of "hello money" in the grocery trade is prohibited under the Restrictive Practices (Groceries) Order, 1987, which remains in force under the Competition Act, 1991 (Commencement) Order, 1991. I have no information on the existence of this practice outside the grocery trade.
