Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Repeat Pupil Status.

John Ellis

Question:

183 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Education if pupils repeating sixth class in the national school are covered by insurance and are also validly enrolled as pupils of the national school which they attend, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is the responsibility of the board of management of a national school to arrange to have adequate insurance effected against liability for injury to pupils who attend its school.

The position with regard to repeat sixth class students is that my Department do not recognise pupils retained in sixth standard as validly enrolled except where a pupil has been absent for a considerable time due to illness or for sound educational reasons.
