Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Posts.

Jim Higgins

Question:

193 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of, (1) the allocation in the 1992 Estimates for the employment of additional remedial teachers for primary schools and (2) the number of additional remedial teachers to be employed on foot of this allocation.

As the Deputy will be aware, 80 additional remedial posts serving over 240 schools were allocated in June 1991 under arrangements in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress. The remuneration costs of the additional posts entailed are included in the teachers' salary provision in the normal way and would be of the order of £1.2 million in the current year.

The agreement reached with concerned interests under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress provided that the posts in 1992 will be used to reduce larger class sizes by improvement of the teacher appointment schedule and that additional posts coming on stream in 1993 will allow for the provision of special posts including those for remedial teachers.
