Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Abortion Advice.

Ivor Callely

Question:

253 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to any GMS general practitioners who provide abortion advice to patients; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not been made aware of specific instances of such advice being given by general practitioners in the GMS. The provision of advice by a medical practitioner to a patient is a matter for the professional judgment of the practitioner concerned, having due regard to ethical and legal considerations and the particular circumstances of the case. It would not be appropriate for me to interfere in any way in the doctor/patient relationship.
