Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Northern Ireland Prison Practice.

Tony Gregory

Question:

304 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on the forcible strip searching of women prisoners (details supplied) in Maghaberry Prison, County Derry, on 2 March 1992; and when he intends to raise this matter with the British authorities.

I was concerned to hear of the events of 2 March at Maghaberry Women's Prison which can serve only to increase tension within the prison. I have already sought clarification of these events from the British authorities through the framework provided by the Anglo-Irish Agreement.

The Deputy will be aware of the Government's view that the practice of strip-searching in prisons in Northern Ireland should be kept to an absolute minimum.
