Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Employment Schemes.

Tony Gregory

Question:

448 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline the number of persons employed on social employment schemes each year since their introduction; and the number of persons who applied for extensions beyond the 52 weeks maximum and whose applications were refused.

Throughput for the social employment scheme each year since the scheme was introduced is as follows:

Year

Throughput (ie numbers leaving)

1985

5,500

1986

6,100

1987

8,500

1988

13,623

1989

11,226

1990

12,279

1991

16,276

The scheme offers participants work related opportunities for 52 weeks. Applications for extensions beyond this period are initially made to FÁS. Records of the numbers of applications made and refused by FAS are not available to me.
