Vol. 417 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

30 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the number of sheltered dwellings built in Ireland by local authorities in each of the last five years for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on the trend indicated.

Sheltered dwellings are provided by housing authorities for elderly persons only. However, the information readily available does not distinguish the number of sheltered units within the total provided specifically for elderly persons. On the basis of returns made to my Department by housing authorities, the total number of units of accommodation provided by them for elderly persons were as follows:

1986

830

1987

579

1988

325

1989

224

1990

189

Complete figures for 1991 are not yet available.
