30 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the criteria which will be laid down for the appointment of the Chief of Staff.

92 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the criteria which will be laid down for the appointment of the Chief of Staff.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 30, 79 and 92 together.

Section 12 of the Defence Act, 1954 specifies that a person appointed to the office of Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces shall be an officer of the Permanent Defence Force. An appointment to such office is made by the President acting on the advice of the Government.
