Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - British Port Access Roads.

Ivan Yates

Question:

31 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline the discussions, if any, he has had with his British counterparts as regards improving port access roads on the west coast of Britain which are heavily utilised by Irish ferry and haulage operators.

The Government have made known to the UK authorities their support for the major investment being undertaken on the North Wales Coast Road to Holyhead, which will be upgraded to dual carriageway standard by 1997. The Government have also discussed with the UK authorities their wish to see rail services from Holyhead developed to cater for the anticipated increase in rail traffic arising from the opening of the Channel Tunnel.

I have not as yet had the opportunity of having any discussions with UK Government Ministers on the topic of road access to UK west coast ports.

I can assure the Deputy that I will not let an opportunity pass to express to my UK counterparts our concerns regarding port, road and rail developments affecting our seaborne trade.
