Vol. 418 No. 5

Written Answers. - Promotion of Products and Industries.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

102 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the total number of persons in Irish Embassies abroad who are available to promote Irish products or industries; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland has 34 resident bilateral Embassies and Consulates with a total staffing of 112 diplomatic officers. Each of these officers is aware of the importance placed by the Government on all aspects of the promotion of foreign earnings, including assistance to Irish exporters, tourism and the attraction of foreign investment to Ireland.

The degree to which individual officers become directly involved in economic work and promotion depends on a number of factors, including the assignment of responsibilities within the particular mission; the economic system of the country concerned and the opportunities it offers for Irish economic interests; and whether or not the principal Irish promotional semi-State agencies (such as An Bord Tráchtála and the IDA) maintain offices in that country.

I can assure the Deputy that the Department of Foreign Affairs place a high priority on the promotion of foreign earnings and that their missions abroad are availing of every opportunity to advance the national economic interest.
