Vol. 418 No. 6

Written Answers. - Ireland-US Social Security Agreement.

Enda Kenny

Question:

146 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Social Welfare the present position in regard to the signing of the bilateral agreement between the Irish and United States Governments in respect of social security rights for returned Irish pensioners as this agreement was due to be signed in September 1991.

The text of the proposed bilateral agreement between the Government of Ireland and the United States was recently approved by the Government. Arrangements are being made for the signing of the agreement next week, following which the agreement will be submitted to Dáil Éireann for approval. It is expected to come into operation in 1993, when the constitutional and legal requirements on both sides have been completed.
