Vol. 418 No. 6

Written Answers. - Custom House Refurbishment.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

88 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Finance the plans his Department have for the refurbishment of the interior of the Custom House, including the rewiring which is ongoing; if he will outline the manner in which it is proposed to refurbish the offices in the Custom House and the standard involved; if he will give details of the estimated cost; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Office of Public Works are currently carrying out the rewiring of the Custom House including the installation of emergency lighting and smoke detection systems in the escape routes. The estimated cost of this work is £900,000 which is being met from the Office of Public Works Vote.

General maintenance and refurbishment of the interior of the building is the responsibility of the occupying Departments, namely the Department of the Environment and the Revenue Commissioners (Customs & Excise). I understand that the Department of the Environment, through the Office of Public Works, are arranging for refurbishment of certain areas of the building at an estimated cost of £200,000.

Any work carried out would be to the standard generally appropriate to offices occupied by the Civil Service.
