Vol. 418 No. 6

Written Answers. - Granting of Pardons.

Ivor Callely

Question:

103 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the submissions which have been received in the recent past with a view to having a pardon granted to prisoners as referred to in the reply to Deputy Callely's parliamentary question No. 53 of 2 April 1992; and if he will give details of submissions which have been received and the cases to which they refer.

In my reply to the Deputy's question of 2 April 1992, I indicated that submissions had been received in the recent past with a view to having a pardon granted in certain cases. This information, which was conveyed in order to assist the Deputy as far as possible, was not intended to refer only to cases involving prisoners. In the normal course of events, I would not feel entitled to divulge details of such cases which are, of course, confidential without the permission of the person or persons concerned or at least an awareness that they were agreeable to such a course of action. However, it is already public knowledge that submissions have been received in respect of the case of Mr. Edward N. (Nicky) Kelly and the cases of Mr. Joseph Meleady and Mr. Joseph Grogan.
