Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Home Help Applications.

Tony Gregory

Question:

189 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health if he will request the Eastern Health Board to review the position of six persons (details supplied) in the East Wall area of Dublin 3 who urgently require a home help, which they are fully entitled to, but the very small cost involved has not been sanctioned resulting in these people being denied their entitlement.

The Home Help Service in the East Wall area is provided on behalf of the Eastern Health Board by the St. Laurence O'Toole Home Help organisation. Assessment of needs and decisions on allocation of suitable home helps to persons referred to the service are made by the local home help organiser. Each organiser has been asked to prioritise cases referred to her within the overall budget available for her organisation. This year the Eastern Health Board has allocated £65,000 to the St. Laurence O'Toole organisation. This allocation compares with £52,000 in 1991 and represents an increase of 25 per cent on last year. The organisation has full discretion in assigning home helps within their budget.
