Vol. 418 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of Secret Organisations.

Dick Spring

Question:

3 Mr. Spring asked the Taoiseach if he has advised the members of his Government that membership of secret or secretive organisations is not compatible with the holding of office; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Members of the Government have been made aware on more than one occasion that they should not engage in any activities that could reasonably be regarded as interfering or being incompatible with the duties of their offices and the relevance of this rule to secret organisations has been made clear.

I am satisfied that the rule continues to be upheld by all members of the Government.

Has the Taoiseach taken upon himself — since he took office — to reiterate this instruction to his Cabinet members? Is he satisfied that no member of the Cabinet is also a member of any secret organisation?

The answer to both questions is "yes".
