Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Brucellosis Pre-movement Test.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

50 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he is satisfied that there is no pre-movement test for brucellosis; and if he will introduce regulations to ensure that cows cannot be grazed on leased land unless they have been tested for brucellosis.

The pre-movement test for brucellosis in respect of the domestic trade was discontinued with effect from 30th April, 1988 and there are no plans to reintroduce such a test. A 30 day pre-movement test is still required for exports.

The question of introducing regulations for the pre-movement testing of animals due to graze on leased land was examined by my Department in the past. As leased land becomes part of a herd-owners overall holding, it was considered that implementing such regulations would not be practical.
