Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - United Meat Packers Plant Stocks.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

82 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the intervention stocks destroyed in the recent fire at the United Meat Packers plant at Ballaghaderreen; whether the stocks were insured; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The fire at UMP Ballaghaderreen on 7 January 1992, gave rise to the loss of almost 7,000 tonnes of Irish intervention beef. The beef was insured and claims for £23 million approximately in respect of losses have been made and are currently being processed. I expect an initial response to this claim very shortly.
