Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Health Care.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

95 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that since DFR A12 is not relevant to the provision of medical treatment for military personnel other than officers and that, since the arrangements made by his Department with the Department of Health for the treatment of enlisted personnel in relation to public impatient and outpatient hospital services charges have been implemented, a two-tier health system has existed in the health care of members of the Defence Force such as officers of the PDF who may, and in fact have, in the past availed of private health care in both public and private hospitals whereas enlisted personnel of the PDF may only avail of public health care in public hospitals; if he will outline the action, if any, he intends to take to rectify this unjust situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The vast majority of Defence Force personnel who require medical attention receive treatment in military hospitals or Medical Aid Posts within barracks at this Department's expense.

Similar treatment is afforded by the Army Medical Corps to all personnel whether they are officers or enlisted personnel.

The facilities within the civilian health care system are availed of only in cases where the necessary treatment is outside the scope of the Army Medical Corps.
