Vol. 418 No. 9

Written Answers. - Youth Employment Levy.

Ivor Callely

Question:

110 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Labour the amount of revenue which has been generated each year since the introduction of the youth employment levy; if he will outline the way in which this revenue was allocated to youth employment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Up to 1988, all of the proceeds of the youth employment levy were allocated to youth programmes and details of the allocations are set out in my Department's Vote in the Book of Estimates for each year in question.

Under the Labour Services Act, 1987, the scope of the levy was extended to employment and training generally and since then has been used towards the funding of activities of FÁS, CERT and certain programmes run by the Department of Education.

Details of levy receipts are set out in the Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts. Levy receipts for the years 1982 to 1991 are as follows: 1982, £38,600,282; 1983, £69,382,507; 1984, £83,250,081; 1985, £83,590,347; 1986, £90,668,087; 1987, £96,923,727; 1988, £125,428,747; 1989, £116,690,478; 1990, £125,042,379; 1991, £134,388,974 (provisional).
