Vol. 419 No. 1

Written Answers. - Convictions of UDR Personnel.

Ivor Callely

Question:

160 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of serving UDR personnel who have been convicted of offences; and whether matters of this nature are discussed at meetings of the Anglo-Irish conferences.

The figures available to us indicate that some 150 members of the Ulster Defence Regiment have been convicted of serious offences, including 19 members who have been convicted of murder.

The Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference has given priority attention to the need to ensure that all members of the security forces, including the Ulster Defence Regiment, operate at all times within the rule of law. Issues of concern which have arisen in respect of specific cases as well as questions of general policy have been raised by the Irish Government and discussed at meetings of the Conference.
