Vol. 419 No. 1

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: Deputy Fennell — whether the Minister for Education will issue guidelines to State supported schools forbidding the use of school buildings and grounds for organising, promoting or fostering functions, meetings or marches about abortion; Deputy Durkan — the failure of the Minister for Education to respond to the needs of Confey College, Leixlip, County Kildare, by way of provision of permanent buildings to replace temporary school buildings currently in use; Deputy Ryan — the future of Kinsealy Research Centre, County Dublin, given the commitment by the previous Minister for Agriculture and Food that the Kinsealy Research Centre would remain open, particularly given its implications for some 60 jobs and its importance as a research and advisory service to the horticultural industry; Deputy Boylan — the reason patients in private nursing homes in Cavan are not entitled to any subvention payments from the North Eastern Health Board in the same way as in nursing homes generally across the country and if the Minister for Health is aware of the crisis situation in Cavan regarding the care of the elderly; Deputy Harte — the notice given by the British Army authorities in Northern Ireland that they intend to close the Culmore Road and Letterkenny Road Border crossings for an indefinite period which will cause serious disruption to the entire community on both sides of the Donegal/Derry Border; Deputy D. Ahern — the problems being created by the closure of a ward in Louth County Hospital, Dundalk; Deputy G. O'Sullivan — the threat of the loss of 400 jobs at the Apple Computer Plant in Cork, and Deputy Allen — the possible loss of 400 jobs at Apple Computers, Hollyhill, County Cork, and to ask the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies Allen, Harte and Ryan.
