Vol. 419 No. 2

Written Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

Ivor Callely

Question:

37 Mr. Callely asked the Taoiseach if he will publish unemployment figures on a local basis such as Dáil constituency or postal code areas.

The monthly area analysis of the live register, published by the CSO, provides details of the numbers registering at each of the 128 local employment offices. The methodology involved in compiling these figures does not make them amenable to re-classification along the lines suggested by the Deputy.

Unemployment figures from the five-yearly census of population are however available down to the level of the district electoral division and these may be reaggregated in a flexible manner.

Taken overall, I am satisfied that these two sources provide sufficient information on the unemployment situation at local level.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

38 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach if he will outline the percentage rate of increase in the numbers unemployed since March, 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The numbers on the live register increased by 12.0% between March 1987 and March 1992; this is equivalent to a rate of increase of 2.3% per annum.
