Vol. 419 No. 2

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Scheme.

Enda Kenny

Question:

75 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the number of applications received and the amount of grants paid out under the urban renewal scheme in each of the areas so designated; if he considers the scheme to be a success; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Qualifying urban renewal projects in areas designated under the urban renewal scheme benefit from special tax reliefs and rates remissions rather than from direct grants by the Exchequer. However, a scheme of urban renewal grants was in operation between 1989 and 1991 to assist works by local authorities to upgrade the general environment of the designated areas. £5.5 million was paid under this scheme as set out in the following tabular statement.
