Vol. 419 No. 3

Written Answers. - Powers of DPP.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

37 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice whether he favours giving powers to the Director of Public Prosecutions to seek a review of sentences he considers to be over-lenient.

The question of changes in the law in this area will be considered when the report of the Law Reform Commission on sentencing policy, which I understand will cover the question of whether the prosecution should be able to appeal against over-lenient sentences, is received by the Attorney General and submitted to the Government.
