Vol. 419 No. 6

Written Answers. - Orthodontal Treatment.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

125 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the number of people awaiting orthodontal treatment in South Tipperary; the number being treated at present; the number awaiting assessment; and if he will outline the steps, if any, he will take to ensure that those awaiting treatment will be treated before it is too late.

I understand from the South Eastern Health Board that there are 565 children undergoing specialist orthodontic treatment in south Tipperary and there are 184 on the waiting list for such treatment. 193 children are awaiting assessment. Urgent cases are treated as a matter of urgency.

There has been a significant improvement in the level of orthodontic services in the south Tipperary area as a result of the additional moneys made available by the Government. In addition a full-time Consultant Orthodontist will be taking up appointment with the board after the summer which will result in further improvement in the provision of orthodontic services in the region.
