Question:

214 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that extra nursing staff are needed for St. Joseph's Hospital in Clonmel, County Tipperary; if he intends to provide this staff, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 189, 191, and 214 together.

The identification of staffing needs and the provision, organisation and management of services at St. Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel are a matter for the South-Eastern Health Board in the first instance.

Under current procedures, proposals for the filling of new and replacement posts are reviewed on a monthly basis by my Department. This review is undertaken having regard to service and personnel criteria in the context of the priority afforded to each post by the agency concerned and with particular regard to the availability of financial resources.

The South-Eastern Health Board in its most recent submission to my Department sought one permanent replacement staff nurse post for St. Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel. Sanction has been given for this post to be filled in a permanent capacity. This is in addition to three other replacement nursing posts which have been approved for filling on a permanent basis at St. Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel recently.
Discussions are ongoing between the health board and the nursing unions on the level of nursing staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel. In view of this, it would not be appropriate for me to comment any further on the matter at this time.
