Vol. 419 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Library Facilities for Naval Personnel.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

25 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider providing a library service for sea-going personnel with the co-operation of the local library service.

Up to two years ago a mobile library from Cork County Council visited the Naval base on a regular basis.

I understand that there would be no problem with the mobile library resuming such visits to the Naval base on a biweekly basis provided the visits receive reasonable support from Naval service personnel.

I welcome the Minister of State's reply, as no doubt does Deputy Gerry O'Sullivan, in regard to the service to Haulbowline. Would the Minister of State not agree that the most effective way to ensure a library service for the Naval base lies in the construction of the long awaited training centre which would incorporate a permanent library rather than having books arriving on wheels every other week?

I accept what the Deputy says.

Now that the site has been acquired can the Minister give the House any indication of when work might begin on the construction of that training centre?

That is a separate matter.

Yes, and if the Deputy will table a separate question it will be replied to.
