Written Answers. - Smoking Statistics.

Question:

104 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health whether his Department have statistics on the number of (1) male smokers and (2) female smokers in each of years between 1987 and 1992.

The statistics requested by the Deputy are as follows.

For smokers aged 15 years and over these statistics are collected over a 12 month period running from July to July and the results for each year are averaged.

Percentage of the population aged 15 years and over who smoke 1986-87 to 1990-91.

This represents the continuation of a downward trend in smoking among adults since 1972-73 when the percentage of men smoking was 49 per cent and the percentage of women was 37 per cent. Survey results for the year 1991-92 will not be available until Autumn of this year.
