Vol. 419 No. 10

Written Answers. - Prisoner Transfers.

Ivor Callely

Question:

37 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if he has satisfied himself with the way prisoners who are not a high security risk may be transferred from one prison to another without the family being notified of the move as in the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the absence of the name of the offender it is not possible to comment on this specific case.

The transfer of prisoners from one institution to another occurs on a regular basis for operational reasons. The normal practice is that a prisoner on transfer is allowed write a letter to his or her next-of-kin informing them of the transfer or alternatively, where the prisoner so requests, the prison authorities arrange to have his or her next-of-kin contacted by telephone.
