Question:62 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline his Department's guidelines to local authorities in selecting suitable sites for waste disposal; and if there is an EC directive in this area.
Written Answers. - Waste Disposal Sites.
My Department has issued guidelines to local authorities on the factors to be taken into account in selecting, developing and operating landfill sites. A copy of the guidelines is available in the Oireachtas library. Section 62 of the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1992 envisages that the new agency should specify and publish criteria and procedures for the selection, management, operation and termination of use of landfill sites.
There is as yet no EC Directive dealing specifically with the landfill of waste. Consideration by the EC Council of Ministers of a proposal for a Directive on this matter is at a preliminary stage.
